The Indian Medical Association (IMA), which claims to be a
professional body of doctors, does not seem to care for ethics.
It continues to
endorse commercial products despite having been censured by the Medical Council
of India (MCI) for the practice three years ago.
The licenses of top
functionaries IMA were suspended for a year and they were warned not to commit
similar offence in future. The case then related to endorsement of certain
PepsiCo and Dabur products for fees ranging in crores.
Unrepentant and
unwilling to learn from the past, the association has now ‘endorsed’ water
purifier of a Noida company.
Incidentally, BJP Lok Sabha member, Hema Malini,
is brand ambassador of this product. The latest ads released for this purifier
claim it is ‘approved’ by IMA. Some commercial material use words ‘validated’
and ‘accepted’ as well.
In the interest of consumers and its own members, IMA
should reveal details of its latest commercial deal.
Hema Malini, who is a
public representative, also owes an answer to consumers about claims supported
by her in the commercial.
The ad quotes a dubious study done by mischievously
named body called “Women Health Organisation”.
